Synopsis

A potent mixture of surrealism and realism, Touki Bouki paints a fragmented picture of 1970s Senegal through the story of two young lovers from Dakar trying to scrape together the money to go to Paris. Mambéty talks about wealth, alienation, youth and hopes in a collage of political and sexual images. Making masterful use of editing, music and colour, he creates spectral images of postcolonial African society.
