Opening Screening
Heart of a Dog | Laurie Anderson
Synopsis
A personal-essay film that explores themes of love, death and language. Anderson's voice is a constant presence as stories of her dog Lolabelle, memories of her mother, childhood fantasies and political and philosophical theories unfurl in a seamless songlike stream. Theories on sleep, imagination and disorientation are framed as questions about time and identity, and at the centre of the film is a visual and poetic meditation on the bardo, as described in the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Is it a pilgrimage? Which way do we go?
Bio/Filmo
Laurie Anderson (Illinois, 1947) makes music, paintings, installations, sculpture and theatre, but sees herself above all as a storyteller. She is known as a pioneer in electronic music and has invented devices and instruments which she uses in her performances. Over the course of her career she has worked with a wide range of artists, including William Burroughs, Brian Eno, Philip Glass, Peter Gabriel and her late husband, Lou Reed. She says that making Heart of a Dog was a way to translate her work into a form she had never used in this way before.
