Producing auteur documentaries

L'Alternativa Activities - Film Schools

Tuesday 14 November, 11 am–1 pm
CCCB Auditorium
Master’s in Film Production at the UVIC

Speaker:
Paco Poch, photographer, cultural manager, producer and distributor

Film and television production systems are constantly changing, and today we can find a range of different styles for creating, analysing, funding and selling projects. Producers (executives, agents, associates, etc.) are always looking for new ways to position themselves with regard to markets, institutions and new technologies. New dynamics are shaping the terrain, which is now starting to take shape as a theoretical force for producing disciplines and tools worthy of consideration.
We shall look at the specific features of production models by studying the cases of different auteur films produced by Paco Poch, including Gaudí (Manuel Huerga, 1989), Innisfree (José Luis Guerín, 1990), Cravan vs Cravan (Isaki Lacuesta, 2002), La leyenda del tiempo (Isaki Lacuesta, 2006), Buenaventura Durruti, anarquista (Jean-Louis Comolli, 2000), Caracremada (Lluís Galter, 2010) y La substància (Lluís Galter, 2016).

Audiovisual translation and subtitling

L'Alternativa Activities - Film Schools

Wednesday 15 November, 11 am–1 pm
CCCB Auditorium
ATRAE - Asociación de Traducción y Adaptación Audiovisual de España

Speaker:
Begoña Ballester-Olmos, translator and subtitler

You’ve just finished editing your film and you want to present it at an international festival. How can you turn your project into a product that cuts across the language barrier? In this session we shall answer many of the questions that can arise when it comes to subtitling audiovisual work and look at how to use some basic subtitling programmes. We shall talk about the limitations of subtitles and free-programme and professional formats. We shall also have something to say about translation and that cousin of yours who has spent three summers in London and now has the First Certificate under their belt. Above all, we shall focus on the key points to bear in mind before handing material over to the professional translator and subtitler you have chosen to entrust your film to.

Dark truths, bright lies: Post-truth in contemporary documentaries

L'Alternativa Activities - Film Schools

Thursday 16 November, 10 am–1 pm
CCCB Auditorium
Master’s in Theory and Practice of Creative Documentary Making at the UAB

Panellists:
Josep M. Català, professor in audiovisual communication at the UAB
Elías León Siminiani, film director
Macarena Recuerda Shepherd, visual artists and dancer

Documentaries don’t lie, but they don’t exactly tell the truth: they simply state and explore the complex nature of the real world as honestly as possible, that is, through the deep honesty of art. Any kind of contemporary documentary therefore becomes a laboratory where ethics and aesthetics, objectivity and subjectivity, the known and the unknown, certainty and imagination are the ingredients for a thrilling experiment in alchemy.
Do documentaries have anything in common with a detective story? For director Elías León Siminiani, author of Lo que la verdad esconde: el caso Asunta, they do. But sometimes detectives-cum-documentary-makers have to discover the mysteries of their own story, as shown by Macarena Recuerda’s remarkable autobiographical work combining film and theatre. Both artists work their own individual way through the labyrinth of truth: Siminiani also makes autobiographical films; Macarena Recuerda also explores uncertainty in photographs. Together they will help us get to grips with last year’s Word of the Year: post-truth.
