Dancer in the Dark
Lars von Trier
Synopsis
Selma, a Czech immigrant on the verge of blindness, struggles to make ends meet. When life gets too difficult, she learns to cope through her love of musicals, and dreams up little numbers to the rhythmic beats of her surroundings.
“This is a film about which no one can remain neutral ... It can elicit, sometimes within a single scene, a gasp of rapture and a spasm of revulsion. Come to the theatre prepared, with a handkerchief in one hand and a rotten tomato in the other.” (A.O. Scott, The New York Times)
Shot by the recently deceased Robby Müller, the musical sequences were filmed simultaneously by over 100 digital cameras so that multiple angles of the performance could be captured and cut together later. Edited by Molly Malene Stensgaard (1966), who has worked with Lars von Trier on almost all his films.
“The editor’s responsibility is to make the translation from writing to film.” (Molly Malene Stensgaard)
