The Colour of Reality: Cinematography in Documentary Filmmaking

Documentaries have very close ties to reality, but does this intimate relationship make them immune to the filters introduced by all filmmaking equipment? The recent trend to colourise old black-and-white documentaries raises the question of just how much technology shapes reality. Do documentaries capture reality as it is or do they merely create one vision of it? Do documentary makers effectively see reality through a cinematographer’s lens? If so, what techniques and insights can they draw upon?
