The Other Side of the Wall. Educational Filmmaking
Films open up an enticing gateway to realities beyond our own experience. The award-winning documentary Al otro lado del muro (Pau Ortiz, 2017) introduces us to Rocío (14) and Alejandro (18), two teenagers who have to take charge of the rest of their family when their mother is wrongfully jailed. Rather than play the role of victims, though, the two brothers bravely take on their fears with a sense of humour.
In this session, we shall focus on how this documentary was structured and talk about the aesthetic and narrative choices that were made in order to express certain emotions. We shall also look at the differences between documentary and fiction films and see how the line between reality and fantasy can sometimes turn out to be less clearly drawn than we might think.
Al otro lado del muro took part in Mentoring Projects in 2013, when it was provisionally entitled Casa cerezo.
