La Mami

Synopsis

Mexico City is home to the legendary Barba Azul cabaret. In between their shifts of dancing and drinking with paying customers, the women head for the toilets to change their outfit, do their makeup and chat about life, under the watchful gaze of La Mami, who dishes out loo roll and advice with similar aplomb. For La Mami, “Men are only good for two things in life: absolutely nothing at all and to be relieved of their money.” Laura Herrero Garvín gives us a rare insight into the private domain of a suitably modest and infinitely wise matriarch as she aids and abets a group of courageous women determined to remain in control of their own lives.
