The Experience of Writing a Nonfiction Screenplay
For a documentary filmmaker, the line between writing and filming is not always that clear cut. You can film with writing in just the same way that you can write with a camera. At the heart of both these complementary activities is the imagination: sound and vision can reveal a world to be analysed in writing, but at the same time writing can breathe life into flights of fancy we then look to film in the world around us. Just as writing shapes the perspective that educates our gaze, the camera sculpts the chances and surprises that only our perspective can appreciate.
